Mikri and Megali Prespa since 1974 are National Parks and also are protected by Greek and European Laws and also are under the protection of Ramsar Convention. The diverse habitats such as rural landscapes, beaches, forests, wetlands, grasslands, streams, alpine meadows, and other related to the small size of Mikri Prespa Lake are making especially Mikri Prespa a unique wetland and main habitat for bird species, which are threatened worldwide with extinction, to breed. That is why Lake Mikri Prespa has been recognized internationally and globally as one of the most important wetlands!
Prespa Lakes host at 120-150 pairs of Dalmatian Pelicans that is the largest colony, is one of the few places that White Pelicans are nesting, and also holds the second in size European population of Pygmy Cormorant.
In the scrubby areas it is likely to be seen Woodchat Shrikes, Lesser Grey, Barred and Red-backed warbler. In the reeds and the reed's fringes could be spotted Marsh and Savi's warblers, Little Bitten and Baerded Tit. Finally in the sandy areas of the Lakes it is very possible to spot Tawny Pipit and Short-toed Pipit
In the mountainous areas around Prespa Lakes it is more likely to spot Marsh and Sombre Tits, Subalpine and Eastern Bonelis’s Warblers, Hazel Grouse and Black and Middle Spotted woodpeckers among other species of woodpeckers that can be found in the area.
In the area is likely to birdwatch amongst hundred of birds Lanner Falcons, Great Egrets, Golden and Booted Eagles, Grey and Purple Herons, Golden Eagle, Barred Warbler, Hoopoe, Golden Oriole, Woodchat Shrike, Rock Thrush, Bee-eaters, Eagle Owls, Levant Sparrowhawk, Night Herons, and Goosanders.
Finally Prespa Lakes also hosts the only reproducible population in Greece of Graylag Goose and is an important habitat for seven species of herons and many other endangered species.
